Comments:

House Island is near Portland Harbor’s entrance, between Fort Gorges and Cushing Island. It has been home to a military installation (Fort Scammel), an immigrant quarantine center, a fish processing plant, and a lobster pound/restaurant. It also was the site of a storehouse and wharf used by the lighthouse service from 1841 to 1889.
