From the National Archive site: "Caption: Navesink Light Station, New Jersey. Highlands of Navesink, NY 1885, South Tower. The light of the North Tower was discontinued June 2, 1898. This station replaced two towers erected in 1840. Rebuilt and lighted May 1, 1862. Increase in efficiency - from 1862 to 1884: 2 fixed white lights - Illuminant: Lard Oil - 8,000 Candle Power each. From 1884 to 1898: 2 fixed white lights - Illuminant: Mineral Oil - 10,000 Candle Power each. Since June 2, 1898: 1 flashing white light every 5 sec. - Illuminant: Electric Arc - 90,000,000 Candle Power."
