Comments

Mrs. Eunice C. Howes, widow of Capt. Jacob Stone Howes, died at her home in Dennis, Aug 3d, aged 61 years and 11 months.  It will be remembered that Capt. Howes, one of the most trenchant newspaper writers this County ever produced, was appointed, on the nomination of then Superintendent of Lights Swift to the position of Light Keeper at Sandy Neck, which position he filled with great acceptance up to the time of his death.  Then, upon the recommendation of then Superintendent of Lights Goss Mrs. Howes was appointed to succeed him.  She held the position several years, and proved a most efficient as well as popular Light Keeper.  She lost two daughters from consumption while holding the position, and finally resigned on account of health of remaining members of her family.  She was a good, motherly woman, beloved by all her associates and the announcement of her death will be received with sorrow by all who knew her.  She leaves one son, Mr. Oscar Howes.  the aged mother of Capt. Howes, Mrs. Rufus Howes, died at the Light previous to the death of Capt. Howes.
