LEWES, Del., Feb. 28 - Capt. John S. Birch, who spent more than half a century in U.S. lighthouse service in the Delaware Bay and Delaware River, died yesterday at Sailors Snug Harbor, Staten Island. He was 83.
Born In Chincoteague, Va., Capt. Birch retired about 18 years ago. During his career he served as captain of Overfalls Lightship and the Five Fathoms Bank Light, in the bay, and Finn's Front Light and Tinicum Rear Light in the river.
For some years after his retirement, Capt. Birch lived at nearby Rehoboth Beach. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. [sic] Elizabeth Birth, of Philadelphia, and a son, Albert, of Paulsboro, N.J.
Services will be held at 2 P.M., Tuesday, at the Atkins funeral home. Interment will be in Methodist Cemetery.
