The bridge over the inlet is State Road A1A and this was the old swing bridge. An operator would crank by hand and turn the bridge which revolved around the center post in the middle of the bridge. It was very low to the water, so for many boats to pass the bridge would have to be turned and the channel opened. Originally the operator preferred boats to automobiles and so it was kept open for boaters and closed only when autos (rare in those days - late 1920's) came to the bridge. One bridge operator was very friendly with the lighthouse children and she would let them jump off the bridge into the water repeatedly.   The swing bridge was replaced by a draw bridge, but a the same height, only later to be raised higher.
