Died at his post on the 13th, George M Fenton, keeper of the Long Beach light house, age 71 years. Mr. Fenton had held his position for many years and under different administrations while his son Charles has occupied the assistant’s place. On the morning of the 13th he was taken extremely ill and before the night of the same day he was not, for God had released another of his servants from life’s duties for the rest beyond. Mr Fenton was a native of Connecticut. He removed in early life to Greenport, making that his home while he was employed in different occupations, but the most of his time prior to his government engagement was passed in the coasting trade. He was an upright, honest, faithful type of the true man. Modest in his bearing and retiring in manner, the outside world knew but little of the inner man, but we question if there is a person who dare say George M Fenton was not all he professed to be. Faithful as a hero, he stood at his post under all circumstances and his pastor well said at his funeral that the bell never failed to send out its warning in the midst of fogs or when other causes called for it and we may add neither did the lantern to send out its flashing rays night after night during the long years he has had charge. Converted in early life he soon became connected with the Baptist church of Greenport, remaining a member until his departure. He leaves a widow and one son.
