Notes of Interest shared by Sam Lawrence:

~ Back in the 1950's and 1960's, family members used to find shards of the Fresnel lens in the sand around the tower. it's presumed that it was broken up, and just tossed off the side of the tower when it was decommissioned.

~ The oil house was destroyed in the Hurricane of 1954.

~ There was approximately 3' of water in the tower during the Hurricane of 1954, although the water never breached the main floor of the house. There is a high water mark scribed in the wall of the tower.

~ The connector-way to the tower was rebuilt after it was badly damaged in the 1944 Hurricane. The existing connector is not the same one the alcohol was allegedly hidden under the floor of.

~ The lantern room was severed at the bottom of the window frames, the nubs of the window frames still show, and it appears they just hacksawed them off instead of removing the interior paneling to unbolt them. This paneling and the holes for the parapet ventilators are still in place.

~ The tower has a concrete cap put in place (about 8" thick) which was then covered by tar. Unsure if that was done by the government or not, but it was that way when the family purchased the property.

~The original steam heat boiler is still in place in the basement, although it has long been disused. Several of the steam radiators are still in place in the house. I do not believe it has been used since the government shut down the property.

~ The brick cistern is still in place in the basement.

~ When the government sold off the property, it was originally purchased by Warren J. Clear, for $1,501. Warren Clear was also the gentleman who purchased Sandy Neck Light in 1931 for $711.

~ The Hoyt family purchased the place in January 1936.
