On April 23, 1902, Wilson reported the following unfortunate event to the inspector of the Seventh Lighthouse District: "Sir: it is my painful duty to report that on Friday the 18th at 1:30 P.M. the Keeper Jas. R. Walker returned to this station in a very exhausted condition, and continued very nervous until Saturday the 19th about midnight, when he went out of his mind and continued in that condition all day Sunday and night, and on Monday morning about 4 A.M. he disappeared from the station, presumably fell or jumped overboard, his body has not been recovered." - From Lighthouses of the Florida Keys by Love Dean.
