Anders Gjertsen began his service in 1888 as a carpenter on board the Manzanita. On September 10, 1890, his left leg was crushed at the knee while changing a first class can buoy outside of Tillamook Bay, Oregon. He was taken to the Marine Hospital in Astoria the day of the accident and remained there four months. From there, he was taken to the Marine Hospital in Portland, where he underwent three or more operations over the next 14 months. Since the time of the accident, the knee joint was stiff with an open wound that discharged constantly and was attended with never ending pain.
