In 1863, Clement Van Riper was a government school teacher to the Indians on Garden Island, Michigan. He later became a lighthouse keeper on Beaver Island, Michigan. He drowned off the shore of Beaver Island while attempting to save a life. His remains were never located. His death record - Chandler Twp., Beaver Island, Manitou, Michigan.
He was the first husband of Elizabeth (Whitney) Williams.
