One of the great misfortunes of the storm was the loss of Capt. Charles Johnson, keeper of the Horn Island lighthouse, his wife and daughter Miss Marie, who were washed away from the island with the lighthouse. The ravening sea spared nothing. The scene of desolation is inconceivable. Diligent search was made for their bodies, but the only vestiges that could be found remaining were two clocks and a table cover.
Mr. Billy Waters, a pioneer resident of Horn Island, found and identified the body of Light Keeper Charles Johnson which came upon the south strand of the island Wednesday. Pilot Charles Brash and Mr. George W. Ladnier, accompanied by undertaker John Y. Morgan, went out on the tug Lee Kimball Jr. to take charge of the remains, which were placed in a coffin and brought to Pascagoula for interment.
