In the early hours of April 1, 1946, Leonard Pickering, was one of five service men killed when Scotch Cap Lighthouse experienced a tidal wave that destroyed the building and ended their lives. The remains of four of the men's bodies were not identifiable and they were placed in a common casket and buried in a common grave on site. In 1948, the unidentifiable remains were unearthed and interred at Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Nebraska.
