Mathews, Jan. 31 - James Temple Ripley, 72, of Shadow, Mathews county, retired lighthouse keeper, died at the U.S. Marine Hospital, Norfolk, this morning of bronchial pneumonia. He had served as keeper at the Nansemond river lighthouse many years before his retirement because of ill health.

Surviving him are one sister, Mrs. James Hudgins of New Point; one brother, Raymond Ripley of Mathews Courthouse; one niece and one nephew.

Funeral services will be held at the Forrest Funeral home, Mathews Courthouse, at 3 p.m. Friday, conducted by the Rev. W. S. Grant, pastor of the Mathews charge of the Methodist church. Interment will be in Friendship cemetery, near Susan.

Mr. Ripley was the son of the late John S. and Elizabeth Davis Ripley of this county. He was a member of Oriental lodge, A.F. and A.M., of Nansemond county.

Active pallbearers will be Walter Ripley, Harold Burroughs, Hubert Diggs, Charles Diggs, Franklin Hudgins and Luther Hurst.
