Comments
Shortly after being appointed, he went on leave for just under 2 months to be treated for typhoid fever. Willard F. Norris served as acting assistant in his absence.

McCabe was drowned on February 19, 1916 on the way from the shore to the Light Tower over a spit of land connecting the Tower with Deer Island at low water, except at certain points where the high seas sweep across during gales, which was the case at this time. He was struck by a sea, lost his footing and was unable to regain the land.
