- Nor'easter on February 19, 1972, waves crashed the station, breaking through windows and flooding the station. Power was out and the U.S.C.G. sent Cutter Pendant to help pump out the water. The tower began to tip and C.G. Base Boston sent the directive to abandon the station. The 3-man crew was taken aboard the Pendant and delivered safely to the Base.
- An estimated $400,000 renovation determined the fate of the lighthouse. It was torn down in three weeks in 1982 and replaced by a white fiberglass structure
