The USCG ANT team lead by Raymond Coleman attempted to restore the lighthouse. They found that it had deteriorated to the point where it was unsafe to enter. Rather than give up completely, they erected a skeletal tower directly behind it with a modern optic, ensuring the focal plane aligned with the previous lighthouse. The tower was placed behind the lighthouse so that the structure would not be seen, but it would appear that the light was coming from the lighthouse. The light is still active today.
