Samuel Apolo Amalu

Samuel Apolo Amalu 83 year old veteran lighthouse keeper of the Territory, died quietly in his sleep early yesterday morning in Ewa hospital after a long illness. He worked for the U.S. government as lighthouse keeper for more than 40 years. He retired from his work 12 years ago when he was keeper of the Barber's Point lighthouse. He had made his home at Barber's Point. Born in Halawa, Molokai on July 24, 1868. Mr. Amalu lived as a youngster in Kona, Hawaii. When a young man he came to Oahu and received his education at Kamehameha schools. Surviving are two sons, Charles K. Amalu and George K. Amalu, Barbers Point: a grandson, Samuel A. Amalu and several nephews, nieces, cousins and step-brothers. Funeral services will be held at the graveside of the family plot at Oahu (Nuuanu) cemetery at 4 p.m. Monday with the Rev. Edward Kahale of Kawaiahao church officiating. Williams mortuary, the Chapel of the Chimes is handling funeral arrangements.
