The following is an article from the Del Norte Triplicate in December 1939:
Captain Georges Roux, 62, for nearly thirty years keeper of the St. George lighthouse, died suddenly at the Knapp hospital here early Monday morning following a brief illness. Captain Roux was badly battered a few days previous to his death when he attempted to reach the light house following several weeks shore leave and it is believed this experience brought on exhaustion from effects of which he never recovered.
Captain Roux was able to be around following his attempt to reach the light, but evidently suffered injuries which brought on a fatal illness. Cause of his death was chronic nephritis complicated by terminal pneumonia.
Captain Roux left the Hobbs, Wall wharf in the harbor about ten o'clock Tuesday morning in the small launch with a load of groceries. In spite of heavy seas he made the lighthouse all right but came near losing his life in the boiling surf when an attempt was made to fasten lines to the launch and haul it to the light landing.
After several hours' struggle Captain Roux finally gave up and returned to the harbor, arriving about six o'clock that evening, his boat filled with water, the groceries a total loss, feeling glad to be alive after the worst experience in his long career as keeper of the dangerous light on the tiny speck of rock ten miles off shore.
Captain Roux, who was a native of France, had no relatives in this section. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the Roeder Funeral Home, with interment in the Catholic Cemetery.
