The Bergen Point Lighthouse was built in 1849. It was located at the junction of Newark Bay and the Kill Van Kull, which is about 50 feet from the New Jersey/New York border. It was built on a caisson and consisted of a keeper's dwelling with a lighthouse tower located at one corner. The focal plane of the tower was 46 feet high. The dwelling had 6 rooms. The total construction cost was $4,969.78.
