Comments:
  • A wooden day mark was erected in 1858 to mark the shoal
  • Original lighthouse was made of granite, first lit in 1868
  • In 1874 a 5-room house on the pier of the lighthouse was erected
  • March 1875, as chunks of ice broke free and moved down the river they struck the pier, destroying the dwelling. Keeper Horace Arnold was able to save his son from drowning. The rest of the family was away at the time.
  • 1882 the original tower was demolished and replaced with a cast-iron lighthouse with an integral dwelling space
