Historical Information

  • 1849: The lighthouse built on the west end of the breakwater was not its first, as a light had been exhibited starting around 1838 from the roof of the dwelling constructed on the breakwater to house the project’s superintendent.
  • 1880: Congress appropriated $20,000 for the erection of a tower near Lewes to serve as a rear range light to the existing lighthouse on the west end of Delaware Breakwater. The tower was known as the Green Hill light.
  • 1918: Green Hill tower discontinued.
