The original (1856) structure was a lantern on the roof of the keeper's dwelling. It was replaced by a square brick tower attached to a dwelling in 1897. It was discontinued in 1922. The house was sold at auction; when the high bidder was attempting to move it off the island, it fell into the ocean. The lighthouse tower was demolished a few years later.
