Sand Key originally had a brick tower on a sandy key which was toppled in a storm killing the Keeper and guests. The second tower has withstood many hurricanes, however, the key has changed in sizes and even disappeared several times. Every time a new weather station was erected, a storm would soon come and wipe the key away.
