Father of Keeper Joseph D. Barnett
Retired for disability on June 30, 1933.Capt. Walter L. Barnett, 85, died at his home in Buxton, Friday, June 28th.
He was born in Elizabeth City, son of J.J. & Salome Dailey Barnett, Dare County people, and he had been a resident of Dare County, principally Cape Hatteras, all his life. He retired in 1933 from the U.S. Lighthouse Service after serving 33 years.
Surviving are 2 daughters, Mrs. Loran Midgett and Mrs. Alfred Gray of Buxton; 4 sons, Joseph D. Barnett of Norfolk, Va., Harold K. Barnett of Ketchikan, Alaska, Jarvis & Randolph Barnett of Buxton; 2 sisters, Mrs. Bessie Heckert of Norfolk, Va. and Mrs. J.D. Hayman of Wanchese; 2 brothers, Horace Barnett of Nags Head and Leffers Barnett of Manteo; 8 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
His father, who at his death in his late 90's was the oldest man in Dare County, was a noted veteran of the Civil War, having served in both the Army & Navy of the Confederacy. During his command of the Diamond Shoals Lightship in World War I, a German U-boat commander blew up the ship, after first allowing Capt. Barnett and his crew to leave the lightship. They were permitted to row ashore to their home at Cape Hatteras some 12 miles away. Capt. Barnett spent many years in charge of light vessels off the American coast before his retirement in 1933.
