Comments
On the afternoon of January 16th, John M. Reynolds, accompanied by the First Assistant Keeper, left Sand Island Light Station in motor boat to go to Fort Morgan to meet the new second assistant and has not been heard from since. A landing party which visited Sand Island on January 17th found the station deserted. Continued search and inquiry by the tender CAMELLIA in the Gulf and along the south shores of Dauphin, Petit Bois, and Horn Islands failed to reveal any trace of the missing keepers or the launch, and all hope of their recovery has been abandoned.
